In a heartfelt celebration of faith, members of the Catholic Men Organization from Our Lady of Lebanon Catholic Church in St. Joseph Parish participated in the 2024 pilgrimage to the Our Lady of Peace Shrine in Virginia on December 7, to honor the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

This gathering commemorates the belief that the Virgin Mary was conceived without original sin and serves as a profound expression of devotion among the Catholic faithful.
The Immaculate Conception is one of the most significant Marian feasts observed in the Roman Catholic Church’s liturgical calendar. Each year, Christians around the world take the opportunity to deepen their faith through special services, and for many, attending pilgrimage events becomes an essential part of their spiritual practice.

The pilgrimage this year attracted thousands of participants from various parishes, who gathered at Moulton Corner to engage in a solemn procession reciting the Rosary as they walked to the shrine, highlighting a collective atmosphere of reverence and community. The procession was led by Fr. Boniface B. Florkiah, the parish priest of Christ the King Church, who emphasized the importance of unity and prayer in the lives of the faithful.
In the lead-up to this significant day, pilgrims also took part in a night vigil featuring prayers, praise and worship, and the Holy Eucharistic celebration. Fr. Tersoo Gwaza from the Society of Jesus led the vigil, which was well-attended and marked by a deep sense of spirituality as participants connected with the sacred traditions of their faith.
The celebration of the feast holds special significance in Liberia, where the National Marian Shrine has become a symbol of hope and strength for many. The archdiocese’s history includes a poignant backdrop, with the shrine having served as a refuge during the civil unrest in the early 2000s. The late Archbishop Michael Francis established the shrine as a dedication to the Blessed Mother, and it has since evolved into a National Pilgrimage Centre, drawing thousands each year.
This year’s pilgrimage marked the inaugural attendance of Metropolitan Archbishop Dr. Gabriel Blamo Jubwe, adding a sense of renewed energy and commitment to the annual event. In his homily during the concluding Mass, he expressed gratitude to all who contributed to the success of the pilgrimage and reflected on the significance of the day in fostering community and strengthening faith among participants.
The day’s events culminated in a festive Mass celebrated with approximately 40 priests and accompanied by a vibrant choir, which filled the chapel with uplifting hymns as they celebrated the enduring love and compassion of Mary, Queen of Peace.
The Catholic Men Organization from St. Joseph Parish, alongside many others, returned home enriched by the experience of unity, faith, and hope, affirming their commitment to the teachings of the Church and the significance of the Virgin Mary in their lives. The impactful nature of the pilgrimage served as a reminder of the importance of coming together in prayer and devotion, particularly on such a revered feast day.
